Fenbeast! Proud and Terrifying Companion of The Dark Emissary!

About a month ago, I wrote a post about the Dark Emissary who is the villain of our Nordland campaign. In our campaign he is assisted by wolves and last week we defeated his monstrous and enormous Dire Wolf. Sure wasn’t easy and we ended up pretty beaten, but alive! Poor Viktor (our Bright Wizard) had received strange tokens every time he did something savage, which he happens to do a lot! And during the Dire Wolf fight, each token left him with Disease points, Stress and lots of Wounds. Let’s just say he went home pretty messed up! He will need some time to recover that’s for sure!

Since the original Dark Emissary from the Albion campaigns (old Games Workshop book) is assisted by a fenbeast, we thought it was fitting for him to have one. The GW one is quite small and not as frightful as we wanted him to be, so we bought the Mórannach, Beast of Cill Chonn Bog from Mierce Miniatures (they have a thing with weird names).

We can only hope that we won’t encounter this beast, but somehow I think our GM has already planned another sinister plan masterminded by the emissary!

The Dire Wolf of the Dark Emissary

As I wrote in a previous post, the Dark Emissary has returned and this time with an army of wolves at his disposal. This here is the Dire Wolf from Reaper (metal version) and is the second largest wolf in his army (like it wasn’t big enough already!)

This is a very cool miniature and our encounters with the wolves have been very exciting (really fast monsters) I have another 3 smaller wolves painted with several more in progress and a very large wolf, which needs its own post!

The base is an interesting choice from Kromlech and is part of their Windfall line. You can find them here.

The Dark Emissary has Returned!

As the headline says! The Dark Emissary has Returned!

I decided it was time to put up this guy from our Nordland Campaign. He is by far the most challenging nemesis we have encountered in our WFRP campaigns over the years and he deserves a spotlight!

In our last session, we discovered that an evil and greedy nobleman (with ties to a cult we’re after) has somehow bribed Dark Elves to summon an evil entity to rid the Forest of Shadows of forest spirits. The plan worked to begin with, but the enitity turned to be none less than the Dark Emissary! And he has slowly taken over the forest and surrounding cities, gaining power from each victim.

As of now he controls an army of Wolves. Really big ones! I painted quite a lot of them for our sessions, not knowing the use of them. Well, I do now and it turns out one of the PC’s have been cursed by him and might turn into something… unpleasant. I will have to see next session!

He’s a really cool and unique miniature with many small details and weird symbols. I looked at some old artwork from The Dark Shadows Campaign (simular to Storm of Chaos and Storm of Magic) and based the miniature on that. Here are a few examples:

No-one knows for sure who the Dark Emissaries are, though they are widely regarded as dangerous, evil sorcerers and the harbingers of imminent doom. Wherever he walks, the Dark Emissary sows seeds of deceit and despair, leaving those who listen to his advice utterly broken. – Games Workshop

I have started on a Fen Beast for him, but the original GW model is not so convincing and rather small. So I ended up buying this from Mierce Miniatures. Brittle details like their other miniatures, but I might cut the sticks and branches shorter so they won’t snap off whenever I use it :)

Myriam the Mystic

As I am always scouting Reaper Miniatures for new and interesting minis for myself or King Games, I couldn’t help but notice the resemblance between Sister Lana, Healer and Myriam Jahzia from Diablo 3 – Reaper of Souls expansion. I am assuming that Bobby Jackson saw her as some kind of inspiration as she is quite similar, down to the small details of her staff, headpiece and dress.

I tried to paint her as Myriam as we needed an enchanter and jeweler for our campaign in Nordland!

I chose to paint her hair blonde instead of grey, as if it was a youthful version of her. Whether it is her wit, sense of humour or simply the size of her bosom – she has taken our Bright Wizard Viktor by storm.

I added a few more gems to the miniature to make her look like a jeweler :)

Stone Troll – Golden Jewelry Style!

I really love those old metal Stone Trolls from Games Workshop. They bring so much character and perfectly resembles the stupid trolls from the fantasy battle edition. They were initially part of my husband’s Christmas presents last year, and he plans to make a diorama at some point.

They are really a joy to paint. My husband requested the vivid blue colours he remembers from when he was a kid and had just started the hobby.

This is the first one I have painted so far and I thought it would be fun to paint the trolls as individual characters. This one is very proud of his stolen jewelry and he constantly shows them off to his inferior troll buddies!

He was mounted on a rocky base and I painted the weapon as a stone aswell, ’cause you know, he’s a Stone troll!

Beastmen: Centigors

I have been painting all kinds of outdoors beasts and monsters, which will be part of our newly begun adventure campaign, that takes place outside of Middenheim. As our heroes are escorted by an accountant on her way to Dorfmark (City in Nordland), we are quickly thrown into a political scandal involving a suspicious Burgomeister and numerous raids on local lumber mills. The raiders are humans, but something sinister lurks in the shadows and the beasts are on the prowl in the Forest of Shadows. Several twists have already taken place (despite only 2 sessions!) so I have been busy painting all kinds of beasts for the sessions (as I don’t know for sure which ones will be used as I am not the GM)

Here are some of the larger Centaur creatures of the Beastmen Herd: Centigors

I had fun painting these and I went through a lot finding them in good condition and of course in metal, but I ended up with a bargain on Ebay, so everything went smooth in the end. I actually have 2 spare ones as I ended up purchasing a whole set in its original box. As these are heavier than they look, there was no way I could mount them on top of scenic bases, so I had to make my own using very fine sand, rocks and foliage. My husband is the base master, so I let him decorate them. I asked for a forest look in mainly green colours and I got exactly what I wanted.

I painted them in different colours, as I spent some time experimenting (as usual) I like the “Ginger” one best, that’s the one in the middle. I also experimented on their horns. It worked better on some than others, but from a distance it looks awesome and they look very frightening on a gaming board with forest scenery!

Oh and the original metal figures had ridiculously small shield attached, so I filed/cut them off and put on shields from the Ungor sprue, and it really helped the overall look.

Advertising Pillar!

As I mentioned in my Notice Board post, I also made an advertising pillar using a lot of posters either found online or self-made. The Advertising pillar is from Thomarillion and it has a really good size with loads of space for posters.

I used Vallejo Satin Varnish on both sides of the paper posters like old time posters! Though a lot more succesful than Donald Duck’s attempt with soup can advertisements!
I simply added layer after layer of small posters, and I’m pretty sure there are shortcuts to this such as full printed sides, but this just gives it such an authentic look!
I actually made two of these as one of them was for my pre-painted section a while ago. It sold the same day :-)

It looks great on our Mordheim table as a terrain piece!

Most of the posters on this side of the pillar is made up of posters from the internet and our cool Ulli & Marquand Wanted posters. The wanted poster is Geralt of Rivia from the Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings!

Landship Project is Slowly Progressing!

One of my favourite projects (and most time consuming so far) the Marienburg Class Land Battle Ship is slowly coming on, and I recently bought a plinth for it. I actually plan to use it in my WFRP sessions (epic ones indeed!), so I won’t be permanently mounting it. The plinth is LARGE, and I first thought about making a scenery base on top of the plinth, but something tells me it will take a while. Already put more than 50 hours into the ship alone which is far from finished!

And here it is with what little of the ship I have completed! The missing parts are almost fully painted but I am missing the shield crests as I haven’t finished the colours yet. Oh, and obviously the mast and 7 crew members whose uniform colours I am breaking my brain over! The ship looks a little small for the plinth, but the sides and front (including figurehead) is yet to be attached :)

The wheels were excruciating to paint and I really wish I had an airbrush for it! I really wanted the ship a bit toned down, so no shiny metal parts on the wheels. I used black and blue/grey highlights instead. Let’s see how that works out :-)

Posters for Notice Boards!

I’ve received several mails and comments about the posters I used for the Message/ Notice Board, and I have made a PDF file with all the posters in various shapes and colour shades. Sometimes it just fits better with a pale neutral poster when I put them on buildings and such :)

Here is one we used as hand-outs for our RPG sessions. My husband is the GM and made the poster from an old softcover book.
We originally intended to use it for the old collector miniature Ulli & Marquand’s Wanted Poster Sign, but we ended up with another idea. Reminds me that I need to get that up on the blog some time :-P

I used a small decal scissors for the cut-outs and something called Alles-kleber (which I assume is normal hobby glue) and very carefully glued the posters on the wooden frame :-)

A Break from Vacation!

It has been waaay too long since my last post and the reason, you ask? Vacation and preparing for vacation! As small business owners, my husband and I rarely stop working and when we do, we spend time on our hobby (which is also our work. Cool, right?)

But everyone needs some time off and we have been lucky enough to have a vacation house by the beach at our disposal for a whole month! This has really given us the break we’ve needed for continuing our work on a whole new ruleset for our own RPG game which is set in the Warhammer Fantasy world (Pre-Storm of Chaos and Pre-End-time, obviously!)

It has been a while since we’ve used an official ruleset like WFRP, D&D, Pathfinder etc, because we always end up house-ruling a lot.

We have decided to test these rules (just the two of us) while we are on vacation, and since we have all the “props” and miniatures at our home, we had to bring a limited amount of miniatures in a good old Gw army-suitcase. So as you can see on our session pictures, we had to improvise… A lot! (The pile of green Nurgle-tokens is supposed to be a disgusting pool of slime, the green tablecloth is grass etc). The people next to/on top of the cages are victims which are supposed to be inside them, but I didn’t have the nerves to squeeze them in there!

Sorry for the less than professional pictures taken by my mobile phone :*-) but I thought it would be fun to put them up for people to see. I’m always curious myself when it comes to how people play RPG’s!
The tiny shiny dots on the table are range increments which makes sense when playing!

The heroes are looking for a dwarf (long story) but he had somehow escaped the Beastmen camp and was no where to be found. The heroes decided to save the other prisoners now that they were there, anyway :-P

Here is another picture after the heroes found the dwarf named Snortek. He was hanging head down from a tree while being interrogating by bandits.

I’m glad we brought all the trees cause they really spice up the whole thing. The fir trees are incredibly lifelike and well made. We are already selling a lot of 4-ground trees in our shop, so we will definately be selling these in our online store aswell. I will be adding a bit of paint to the visible parts of the trunks when I get home, but they really outshine my old Games Workshop trees.

Another thing that really helps our players to get into the RPG spirit are props! Instead of having papernotes lying around, we use books which look really great on the table! Not only do they look amazing, but it is also a great way to gather all the notes! Some of our props are cheap remakes from China, but others are actually real antiques.

We have several of the Warhammer dice cups so each player has his/her own :-)
And right before we went on vacation, we received the collector’s edition of Total War: Warhammer, which included the most insane Book of Grudges replica and loads of other high quality props (the drinking horn is epic)

Oh well, turns out my little vacation update turned out bigger than expected! We will be getting home and back to work in a few weeks and then I’ll have time to write a whole bunch of posts!
